Saya dilahirkan di Yogyakarta, 7 Februari 1956, dari keluarga guru; ibu dan ayah bekerja sebagai guru di sekolah rakyat Demakijo Yogyakarta. Sambil menjadi guru, ayah menyempatkan kuliah di Universitas Gajah Mada. Setelah mendapat gelar sarjana, ayah pindah ke Jember dan mulailah pendidikan dasar hingga sekolah menangah atas sayapun berlangsung di Jember. Pendidikan sarjana teknik saya selesaikan di Jurusan Fisika Teknik ITB, pendidikan lanjut dalam Master of Science in Electrical Engineering saya selesaikan di University of Hawaii, Honolulu. Pendidikan tingkat doktor saya selesaikan di Department of Electrical Engineering, the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
